The Power Of a Smile

When is the last time you smiled at someone for no apparent reason? When was the last time you met someone new and accompanied your hestitant greeting with a smile? In Todays World the power of a smile has been forgotten and has been replaced with this notion that being mean to your fellow man is the way to go. Maybe its the "eat of be eaten" concept that has driven people to be such horrible people.

We are more likely to step on someones face to get ahead in our individualistic society than bless someone with a smile. We as a society only care about our own well being and the well being of our interests. Everything is "I, I, I" and we dont care if our success is at the expense of others. Now you may wonder in what world do I live in or whether I come from a strange planet where the streets are paved in gold and people actually give a damn about others......but strangely enough I live in the real world. In a real world dominated by a individuals who believe that they reside on islands disconnected from the rest of the world, and this gives them the false belief that they dont have to worry about the feelings or wellbeings of others.

A smile is not only limited to the contraction of facial muscles producing an up turn at the ends of out lips, occassionaly causing ones teeth to be exposed. A smile can be a symbol for greeting your fellow human (Something lacking in the Muslim community), a smile can accompany a good gesture, helping an old women cross the road, letting someone cut in on the road, etc. A smile is not only limited to our own happiness but to the happiness of others. We should smile but we should also cause others to smile. The smallest gestures can cause the biggest responses. So if you cant smile than atleast help.

I dont know why it is so hard for people to accomodate others or just to smile. It doesnt cost anything to be nice to someone else. It doesnt cost anything to think of others for a mere millisecond out of the hours of our existence which is mostly spent in tasks which derive no benefit. I believe that the environment you are in dictates your emotional responses to others so lets try change out environments from one that is negative to one that is positive.

Try it...Just smile at someone in any manner, whether it be through a small gesture or taking time out to help those less fortunate. Its contagious.

Honestly, I have no idea why some people tend to avoid smiling at eachother. Smiling is certainly so powerful that it has the ability to spread a sort of a positive atmosphere around people. Muslims, however, should be deriving this from their own religious teachings and implementing it in their own lives. But I guess that's not always the case.

Anyways, cool blog!

Here's a smile :)

Where art thou oh Muslim?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Do not abuse anyone…Do not look down upon any good work, and when you speak to your brother, show him a cheerful face.” - (Abu Dawood)

I haven't a clue why people have stopped smiling. And honestly, I haven't thought about it. I've been told on a near daily basis that the most important accessory is a smile, but I don't wear one usually. I should more often, haha your blog brought that to my attention.

I'm a new teacher and read winnie the pooh to the kiddies so when I came across your blog & read your piece about remaining polite in the face of a world who only understands the language of force and arrogance, I wanted to share something with you...I am not a blogger, never use my computer in fact, well I use it for work, period, came upon your blog by chance but I thought I'd share a qoute from winnie the pooh "If ever there is a tomorrow when we are not together (this is to his best friend piglet btw)there is something you must always remember, you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. And, if people do not seem to understand you, be patient, it could be that they have a big fluffy piece of fluff in their ears." Adorable but none the less wise, point being there is no need for you to change so remain brave & true to yourself. Toodlez....
